Q. HOW DO I GET A VISA?
A. US passport holders do not require advance visas. That said, access is contingent on your passport’s age. All participants’ passports must be valid for a minimum of 6 months from date of entry into Iraqi Kurdistan. Visas will be issued upon arrival.
Q. WHAT IS THE WEATHER LIKE?
A. Conditions vary throughout the year. Cold months include October–March and can include snow. The hot season runs over 100*F June–August. Remaining months are generally warm.
Q. IS IRAQI KURDISTAN SAFE?
A. There is more to Iraqi Kurdistan than violence shown in the media. Frontier Expedition Co. takes your safety very seriously and works with local communities to plan itin- eraries and introduce you to the hidden beauty of Iraqi Kurdistan.
Q. WHO CAN JOIN AN EXPEDITION?
A. The physical demands of this trip and hike are not recommended for those who cannot run a 12-15 minute mile. Please consider the rigors of 8-hour hiking days before registering.
Additionally, our Expeditions give participants immersive access to Frontier Alliance International field teams and initiatives; accordingly, all participants must be interviewed by Frontier Expedition Co. personnel before registration is secured and adhere to cultural standards through the duration of the Expedition.
Q. WHAT ARE THE CULTURAL STANDARDS?
A. Expeditions, and life in Iraqi Kurdistan, are stressful. Every participant must be willing to follow their FECo Expedition leader and adhere to all counsel given on the trek. Due to Kurdish culture, consumption of alcohol is forbidden on Expeditions. Men may smoke if desired (this can be effective means to meet and spend time with locals). Every participant must adhere to the dress code per the Expedition Guide sent by FECo administration upon accepted registration.
Q. WHAT IS IT LIKE IN IRAQI KURDISTAN?
A. Bottled water will be provided as tap water is unsafe to drink. Vegetarian diets can be accommodated, though vegan lifestyles will be difficult to sustain in Iraqi Kurdistan. Electricity will be available every day except for hike days. Consider bringing a portable power block for your cell phone. Wifi will be intermittent.
